TAYVALLICH SPORTS COURT OPENING - WHERE RAIN IS GUARANTEED NEVER TO STOP PLAY
Tayvallich Village celebrated the opening of its new Sports Court last Saturday together with guests and sponsors who gathered in the warmth of the village hall. A glass of mulled wine went down well and there was a very warm welcome from Chris Todd who introduced speakers Willie Young, the Council’s Principal Leisure Officer, and David Ewart from Sportscotland. Willie Young presented certificates and prizes to the entrants of the Logo and Poster Competition. Prize winners received polo shirts, sponsored by Allsports Construction and Maintenance and Wright and MacLennan.
The court was officially opened by all the children and young people of the village by pulling on a giant white ribbon which opened the gates. Everyone ran onto the court and David Attwood, who is organising sports coaching in Tayvallich, raised the temperature with some warm-up exercises to combat the elements and get everyone moving. Rain didn’t stop play and Willie Young and his team led football, tennis and shinty sessions, giving a taste of the sporting activities which will be on offer at the court next year.
Meanwhile back in the hall, which had been transformed into a sporting galaxy by Tayvallich Youth Group, hot soup and a delicious barbecue kept everyone warm and in the party mood. The celebrations continued with a fancy dress ceilidh to the music of the Archie John Trio.
The undoubted highlight came around 10.30 pm when the rain stopped and the wind dropped and with the help of inventive sound engineering, the ceilidh moved onto the sports court and everyone danced the night away. To be one of the hundred people dancing the Orcadian Strip the Willow at 11.30 pm on a December evening on Tayvallich Sports Court, is something no-one will ever forget.
