When resources allow, Paths to Health seeks to fund new and innovative ways of promoting walking for health, and can provide grant funding to support this. Paths to Health can only consider funding for projects operating in Scotland.

Award for Bridging Cultures

This year, the Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) are launched for the first time.  Funded by the Baring Foundation and delivered by the Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo), the ABCs will reward grass roots, community and voluntary organisations for local schemes and projects which promote intercultural dialogue and understanding.  It will also reward public and private sector organisations for initiating and supporting such schemes. Triodos Opportunities Fund

Social finance specialists, Triodos Bank, have announced the launch of the Triodos Opportunities Fund, a new venture capital fund for social enterprises. Triodos is now seeking to invest between £200,000 and £750,000 in social enterprises with a proven business model that are looking to grow and scale up their operations. Triodos will work closely with the companies to help build on their success and focus on their long-term development rather than short-term profits. Triodos will provide more than just money and use its extensive network of social economy partners to open doors, make connections and help investees succeed.
The value of the fund currently stands at £3 million.

Crisis—Changing Lives Programme

Crisis, the national Homeless Charity has announced that the Changing Lives Programme will be reopen for applications from the 22nd September 2008 until 31st October 2008. The Crisis Changing Lives programme provides financial awards of up to £2,000 to solitary people who are homeless or settling into a home and looking for support so that they may achieve their vocational goals. The Awards can be used for course fees, equipment or materials for courses, tools, materials and equipment to get back to work, or to set up a business. Applications can not be made by the homeless person, but rather by the support organisation providing ongoing help. This could be a key worker, someone providing guidance concerning training or employment, a housing support officer or someone like a mental health worker.

Historic Scotland Building Repair Grants Scheme

Under the Historic Scotland Historic Building Repair Grants Scheme, financial help is available to owners to meet the cost of high-quality repairs using traditional materials and specialist craftsman to conserve original features in buildings of special architectural or historic interest. In return, owners must insure and maintain the building and allow some access to visitors. Financial help is available to owners in both the private and public sectors (home owners, trusts, commercial undertakings, local authorities) to meet the cost of high-quality repairs. Applicants must be organisations or individuals who have a legal responsibility for the repair of a historic building. You will normally need to own the building, or hold a full repairing lease, which has at least 21 years to run, or be able to demonstrate that you have an agreement to acquire the property in question. There are a number of criteria which have to be met before an award can be considered. The building must be of sufficient outstanding architectural or historic interest; the building must be at serious risk from neglect or repair; and a need for grant for repairs to be undertaken must be demonstrated. The grants awarded range from £10,000 to £500,000.

Tesco Charity Trust - Support for the Elderly and/or People with Disabilities

The Tesco Charity Trust has announced that the next funding round for projects supporting the elderly and/or people with disabilities will begin on 1st August 2008. Through the Trust, community and voluntary groups whose core work is supporting elderly people and people with disabilities can apply for grants of between £1,000 and £4,000 . The Tesco Charity Trust has been in existence since 1987 and aims to provide approximately £600,000 in grants each year. The types of projects supported in the past have included; befriending schemes; luncheon clubs; specialist equipment for disabled people; and day trips/social trips - for elderly/disabled people, etc. The closing date for
applications is the 30th September 2008.

Woodlands In and Around Towns (WIAT)

What's It For? Regenerating woodland environments in urban areas.
Who Can Apply? Charities, community groups and public sector organisations.
What Is Available? Variable.
The WIAT Challenge Fund from the Forestry Commission Scotland aims to regenerate the urban woodland environment close to centres of population, improving the quality of life for people living and working there. Funding is targeted at woods within 1 km of settlements with a population of over 2000 people.
The type of work that could be supported includes:
• development of woodland management plans;
• silvicultural work to improve woodland structure and condition;
• construction of new or improved recreation facilities including footpaths.

Forestry for People (F4P)

What's It For? Encouraging people to become involved with woodlands.
Who Can Apply? Charities, community groups, public sector organisations and land owners.
What Is Available? Variable.
The Forestry for People Challenge Fund from the Forestry Commission Scotland supports local involvement in woodland projects for health, learning and strengthening communities.
Examples of activities that might be funded are:
• setting up walking initiatives;
• developing natural play areas;
• delivering rehabilitation programmes in woodland;
• developing continuous professional development (CPD) programmes for teachers;
• establishing volunteer groups;
• developing not-for-profit initiatives such as green exercise projects.

Funding to Support Joint Projects Between Young People in the UK and France

The Lefevre Trust provides funding of up to £10,000 to support innovative projects between young people in France and the UK. It aims to improve understanding between the UK and France by enabling young people to visit a partner group and further develop a joint venture.
Funding is available for groups of young people from across the UK and France. All groups are eligible to apply; youth groups, extra-curricular clubs, sports teams, school groups, theatre troupes, arts organisations and so on.
Applications for funding are accepted from the formal and non-formal education sector across the UK for young people aged 11-19.
Grants will be awarded to cover mobility costs of both one-way and reciprocal visits to France and its overseas departments that form part of a bilateral project. Projects must have specific aims and activities and work have a central theme, such as; language learning; culture and the arts; energy and the environment; science and technology; and citizenship, etc.
The next application deadlines are the 31st October 2008 for visits starting after the 1st January 2009 and the 31st January 2009 for visits starting after the 1st April 2009.

Funding for Festivals and Performance Groups

The PRS Foundation's deadline for applying to its Awards to Festivals and Awards to Performance Groups is the 14th August 2008. Under the Awards to Festivals funding is available for festivals whose main activity is the promotion of new music by UK based music creators and promoting unsigned bands, The Award for Festivals has two funding levels. Grants for less than £3,000 and grants for more than £3,000. Under the Awards for Performance Groups funding of up to £3,000 is available to performance groups which meets and performs together regularly and which performs either original music or a wide range of music by living UK resident music creators and that have a track record of at least one year. Both schemes are open to all genres of music.

The Roddick Foundation

The scheme - Arts, education, environmental, human rights, humanitarian, medical, poverty, social justice. The foundation was established in 1997 by the late Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop and her husband Gordon. It has the following objects:
• The relief of poverty.
• The promotion, maintenance, improvement and advancement of education for the public benefit.
The provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupations in the interests of social welfare provided that such facilities are for the public benefit.
• The promotion of any other charitable purpose for the benefit of the public.
In 2006/07 the foundation received income of £33 million mainly from voluntary donations. Grants totalled £3.4 million.

Scottish Communities and Householder Renewables Initiative

What's It For?: Help to install renewable energy technology.
Who Can Apply?: Community Groups that are Scotland based, legally constituted and non-profit distributing.
What Is Available?: Generally about 50 per cent of costs.
SCHRI offers grants to Community Organisations to help with the installation of renewable energy technologies.
Organisations may apply for funding for technical assistance and capital grants for renewable energy equipment installation and associated costs.
Grants for technical assistance support non-capital projects, such as feasibility or scoping studies and capacity building within a community. The maximum grant is £10,000.
Capital grants contribute to the capital costs of a project. The maximum grant is £100,000 and can include plant, infrastructure and project management.
There is no set grant funding amount. The amount of funding awarded is determined on a case by case basis with the average grant being in the region of 50%.
Projects with exceptional demonstration value or groups with limited resources may be eligible for a higher percentage of funding. All applicants are required to outline contributions from other funding sources and those with substantial investment from other sources will be regarded highly.
Community Groups include:
• local/national voluntary, non-profit and charitable organisations;
• local rural partnerships;
• local authorities;
• housing associations;
• local enterprise companies;
• companies limited by guarantee;
• universities and schools.
